Berndt Research Foundation – Grants open now

December 20, 2024

The Professor Ronald M. and Dr Catherine H. Berndt Research Foundation (BRF) invites applications for its 2025 grants and awards. The BRF supports Australian Aboriginal social and cultural anthropology research. It was established from a sum of money bequeathed to the University of Western Australia by Professor Ronald and Dr Catherine Berndt for this purpose. Three awards will be offered for 2025.

Honours Bursaries
Two bursaries of $8,000 in support of honours students studying anthropology, one of which is reserved for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. The bursaries are available to any students undertaking an Honours level degree in Anthropology in 2025 at an Australian university. Applications that address how the bursary supports activity associated with their research and how they intend to communicate their research and/or make it available to relevant communities will be considered favourably.

Small Grants
The BRF Small Grant scheme funds between $10–15,000 towards the costs associated with accessing and researching an aspect of an Australian Anthropological collection. The award is available to all researchers undertaking anthropological or cognate studies.

Early Career Research Grant
$10,000 in support of research in the discipline of Australian Aboriginal social and cultural anthropology, and/or a cognate discipline, by an early career researcher from any Australian university. The award is available to all ECRs undertaking anthropological or cognate research, defined to include scholars within five years of the award of their PhD degree (or equivalent taking into consideration career interruptions).

All applications close 28 February 2025 and decisions will be communicated by 14 March 2025.
